Antimicrobial treatment process
How it works?
The ionising radiation treatment of foodstuffs is characterised by its universal applicability. It can be applied to a wide range of products in any packaging.
01
There is practically no change in product temperature during processing. The product quality is maintained even at higher than normal storage temperatures.
02
Due to the suppression of pathogenic microflora, it is possible to improve the safety of food products.

For processing frozen or chilled products, cold rooms and special thermo-cases are used. Refrigerating units are installed throughout the production area, which are able to quickly reduce the temperature in all areas where the products pass through.
For example, in the processing of frozen berries (-18°C) until the moment of return loading, 1-2 degrees are lost on the surface of the package, which is not critical even for such delicate products.

Steps in the treatment process
02
Coordination of processing time/schedule
We book the time for you and agree on logistics and dispatch. We prepare the technological regulations for the antimicrobial treatment process upon customer request.
04
After processing
The products go to the "processed" warehouse where they will be palletised and packed again. Preparation of prefabricated shipments if required. Development of outgoing documentation (delivery notes, antimicrobial treatment protocols).
Steps
01
Selecting and agreeing on a list of products and treatment regime
03
We consider the customer's current objectives and the level of microbiological contamination of products, the presence of antioxidants, preservatives and other additives, the type of packaging (vacuum, MAP), its temperature (chilled/frozen), the composition of the product.
Product processing
We unload the machine to the warehouse of "untreated" products, from where it will be fed to the conveyor by 1-2 pallets.
We conduct a trial treatment to assess the effectiveness of the regime and the quality of products after treatment.
Unpacking of products, stacking of transport packaging (boxes / bags) on the conveyor. Processing "on wheels" or storing products in our warehouses before/after processing (including cold rooms for chilled or frozen products).
Benefits and limitations of the treatment
Benefits
Limitations
A complex solution for integrating technology into your production
Product packing thickness requirement
Working on individual process instructions, developing a set of documentation for your quality management system
Requirements for packaging products in consumer packaging
High efficiency of the technology (complete inactivation of pathogenic, pathogen-potent microorganisms, significant reduction of spoilage microorganisms)
Processing in final consumer packaging (including those already packed in transport packaging)
Requirement for stacking products in transport boxes (according to the stacking map)
Requirement for dimensions of transport packaging (maximum width of one package: up to 60 cm, maximum length: up to 110 cm, maximum weight: up to 50 kg)

Frequently Asked Questions
How to start?
As a rule, we start with the selection of the treatment mode. It is advisable to send us the results of microbiological tests, on the basis of which we will recommend several treatment modes.
We will then process your samples and check them for "microbiology" and preservation of their organoleptic properties. After you are convinced of the effect of the technology, we will start a dialogue on volumes and costs.
What is the regulatory framework for food processing with accelerated electrons?
Food products are processed in accordance with the Interstate Standard GOST ISO 14470-2014, Rospotrebnadzor licence and the safety standards authority certification.
In Russia there are more than a dozen of technical regulations and standards in our field of activity. CORAD provides consultations on the applicability of standards and regulations, if necessary.
Can the quality of spoilt products be restored?
The technology does not restore the quality of spoiled food, so the processing cannot eliminate or replace hygiene and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).
How much does the shelf life of food increase with the treatment?
The safe shelf life after treatment with accelerated electrons is increased many times over. The result depends on many parameters: from the type of product to the intended storage conditions.
You can always take advantage of the possibility of a test treatment and then perform a microbiological analysis of the control and treated samples. Simply describe your task. We will reply no later than the next working day.
Do processed products become radioactive? Even the slightest bit?
No. Not at all.
The centre does not represent any danger to human health. The source of electrons is an analogue of electron-beam tubes, which not so long ago were widely used in TV sets and monitors. You can come with a dosimeter and see for yourself. Our technology of treatment with accelerated electrons with energy up to 10 MeV cannot lead to the effect of induced radiation.
There are no radioactive materials, isotopes or radiation on the territory of the CORAD Centre.
Can the processed products be exported?
Yes, it is possible to export the processed products.
Secondly, veterinary and phytosanitary control authorities of 69 countries have already joined the agreement on the safety of accelerated electron processing.
Firstly, by extending the shelf life, you have more opportunities to organise logistics and distribution.
Thirdly, in many countries, some products are prohibited for import without pre-treatment. For example, in the USA it is forbidden to import unprocessed tropical fruits.
Do you work only with food products?
We have the necessary competences to process pet food, raw materials for cosmetic products, cosmetic products themselves, flowers and so on.
In other words, we process products of animal and plant origin which, due to their origin, cannot be sterile.
Does the nutritional value, flavour, consistency of the food change? Are vitamins and minerals preserved?
Optimally selected processing modes do not change the nutritional value and organoleptic characteristics of products. However, there are exceptions.
They refer to products whose nutritional value is determined by the presence of living cells and microorganisms in them. For example, in milk and milk products, or raw eggs.
Nevertheless, the treatment of some types of cheese with accelerated electrons can control the growth of "noble mould" and is actively used.
The processing of melange and egg powder can reliably guarantee the absence of salmonellae without affecting their organoleptic characteristics.
Are there any restrictions on the type and size of packaging?
The maximum width of one package is up to 60 cm, length up to 110 cm, weight up to 55 kg. We process products in boxes, corrugated boxes, kraft bags and any other types of packaging. We process chilled and frozen products while maintaining the required temperature regime.
What are the types and payment arrangements for your services?
Payment is made by bank transfer within three days of product processing and invoicing.
How much does it cost?
To set the price, it is necessary to consider 2 parameters: the required processing mode and the packaging data (dimensions and weight) because our productivity depends on this.
What does Russian legislation say about the possibility of using ionising radiation for food products?
This technology has long been known and recognised by leading food processing institutes. The procedure for the use of ionising radiation is specified in TR CU. CORAD has all the necessary licences from Rospotrebnadzor and Rosselkhoznadzor.
What are organoleptic properties and how can they change?
Organoleptic properties are a set of indicators of product quality based on the analysis of perceptions of the senses: sight, smell, hearing, touch, and taste. When evaluating goods, firstly, appearance, shape, colour, gloss, transparency, consistency, taste and other properties are determined.
Various changes may be observed in some products under the influence of electronic treatment and it is important to understand the boundary of these changes.
For example, red fish may become slightly lighter when the time of being under the flow of electrons is increased; fresh juices may change their flavour when the processing mode is changed - they may become slightly sweeter; and glass becomes "tinted" even at low modes (although it becomes slightly lighter again over time) - this should be taken into account when processing products in glass containers.
Is it possible to perform ionising radiation treatment somewhere else besides your centre in Kaluga Oblast?
Our centre is unique in its own way - the installed accelerators of the latest generation allow us to carry out treatments in ranges not available to any other similar centre in Russia.
However, to be fair, it should be noted that if your products require a treatment regime of more than 10kGy, it is possible to find such a facility in some large cities, usually at specialised institutes from the times of the Soviet Union.
If you do not have a significant level of contamination of products or, more importantly, a "delicate" or multicomponent product (a ready meal, for example), which reacts with changes in organoleptic properties even to a slight excess of dose, then it is only to us.
In other words - foodstuffs processing with the purpose of increasing shelf life and / or reducing the level of m / b, carried out at low regimes is possible only with us.
